UNISON members are people working in the public services, for private contractors providing public services and the essential utilities. They include manual and white collar staff working full or part time in local authorities, the NHS, colleges and schools, the electricity, gas and water industries, transport and the voluntary sector.

Most people join a union because they want protection at work - help with pay and conditions of service, legal or health and safety advice or representation in case things go wrong at work. That's what we're here for. UNISON negotiates on pay and working conditions at every level - local, regional and national. But we also do a lot more. Being a UNISON member gives you a range of benefits and unbeatable deals

Every member of UNISON belongs to a local branch which is made up of people working for the same employer.

Local stewards are there to represent you at work and help find the answers to your problems. They are volunteers and play a vital role in recruiting new members and organising your branch. If you have a problem, talk to your local steward. If they can't handle the problem on their own, they can talk to other branch officers or full - time union experts on your behalf.

Anyone can face problems at work sometimes but if you are a member of UNISON , you don't have to face them alone. We can provide advice or representation on things like pay, rotas, leave and sickness procedures. We are also there to help you make sure your workplace is healthy and safe, support you in case of disciplinary action, dismissals or redundancy

About UNISON Capability Scotland Branch it was the name adopted by the branch when we formed in late 2001 the branch was formed by UNISON members who are working within Capability Scotland and coincidently this was about the same time UNISON and four other unions won an recognition agreement with Capability Scotland to represent Capability Scotland staff, and we are  recognised by UNISON as a branch in its own right,  but remember we are still part of the larger UNISON union

As you can see from the chart that the members are the controlling influence in all of UNISON they elect stewards in the workplace, branch officers at the AGM, the National Executive, Service Groups Executives (we are part of the Voluntary & Community Sector of UNISON and have delegates to one or more of the Service Groups), and we even elect the General Secretary.

So it is important that you as members are involved because without you there is no union, we are not asking that you become directly involved by putting yourself forward as a stewards,  get involved even if you don't want to be  involved directly by putting yourself up for election as a steward get your voice heard

A note to non-UNISON  members of staff within Capability Scotland

UNISON along with four other unions have a partnership agreement with Capability Scotland which gives us the right as unions of sole negotiation rights on behave of all Capability Scotland staff (with exception to the management board) What this means that we are negotiating on your terms and conditions of employment, hours of work amongst other things whether you are a member of a union or not. So if your not a union member then your views and opinions may be getting overlooked and ignored and If this is getting you annoyed and angry then the remedy is at your fingertips.
